As many of you know, Saintsbury's very top Pinot Noir comes from the Brown Ranch vineyard. What is not so well known (outside the winemaking team at least) is that when Saintsbury replanted Brown Ranch a decade ago, they divided the vineyard into many different blocks and, depending on the soil types and site aspects, planted a different Pinot Noir clone in each block. Each block is vinified separately and blended together at the very end to create the "Brown Ranch" bottling, but each year they bottle a few cases of each block for the winemaker's library. Owner David Graves brought a dozen of these enigmatic samples with him to Japan earlier this year, and a few bottles survived. We are happy to offer a collection of these rarities to anyone who has every wondered if they could taste the difference between Pinot Noir clones, or between two different sites planted with identical clones. Randy Dunn is famous for making some of the longest-lived wines in Napa Valley, and also (refreshingly) not budging on production -- he made 5000 cs in his inaugural vintage after leaving Caymus more than 20yrs ago, and he continues to this day to just make 5000 cases a year at his hideout high atop Howell Mountain at the far eastern edge of Napa.
