Bordeaux-styled wines from renowned Napa Valley AVAs

Giving up a normal suburban life to plant a vineyard and build a winery is not a new story these days, but in 1972, when Bill and Cathy Collins founded Conn Creek, there were only a handful of established Napa Valley wineries, and the path to success was unclear. On the other hand, they quickly found company among other like-minded individuals drawn to this new dawn in American boutique winemaking. And, when  Robert Parker called an early effort – the 1974 Eisle Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon – “one of the great classics of the seventies, as well as a testament to what heights California Cabernet Sauvignon can achieve," they knew they were on the right track and that Cabernet Sauvignon would be their main focus.   Today Conn Creek Winery remains committed to making wines that epitomize the unique terroir of Napa Valley. Anthology is the flagship wine, a blend of Bordeaux varietals sourced from several vineyards up and down the valley. Its nuanced elegance and depth underscores how blending is the winemaker’s true art, a way of combining unique sets of flavors and qualities, expressed by different varietals and grown under diverse conditions, into a new work of expression and inspiration. The Napa Valley Series showcases single varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and even Sauvignon Blanc - that are likewise blended from a range of vineyards. The small-production AVA Series is a way to celebrate the unique qualities of particular districts.  Although Bill and Kathy Collins sold the winery in 1985, they remain involved; indeed,  their Holystone Vineyard in St. Helena forms the backbone of both Anthology as well as the Napa Valley Series. Conn Creek also promotes wine education through such events as the Barrel Blending Experience, in which participants taste barrel samples of Cabernet Sauvignon and other varietals from 16 sub-appellations. Blending their own bottle allows them to appreciate the skill and art that goes into crafting world-class wine.

2013 Conn Creek Sonoma County Zinfndel

Conn Creek’s expertise in blending is carried into Sonoma County with this outstanding Zinfandel. Vineyards in the warmer Alexander Valley as well as the cooler Dry Creek Valley produced a plush Zinfandel that is deep, yet clean and restrained. The alcohol is a reasonable 14.5% and a combination of French and American oak adds a bit of toast and vanilla to the finish.

2013 Conn Creek Napa Valley "Herrick Red"

Conn Creek is renowned for the art of blending; they prefer to source from a variety of AVAs and top vineyards to create a “best of Napa Valley” Cabernet Sauvignon. The proprietary Herrick Red pushes that craft a little further with a blend of 46% Cabernet, 38% Syrah, 6% Merlot and a splash of Primitivo (Zin). The result is a bold wine in which concentrated dark fruit is charmed with accents of spice and earthy notes. Long a favorite source of Cabernet for Conn Creek, the eponymous Herrick Vineyard in Yountville provides the backbone of this blend. The rest of the wine is sourced from a diverse set of vineyards in St. Helena, Mt. Veeder, Oakville and Howell Mountain - a virtual tour of the Napa Valley.

2014 Conn Creek Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Because the Napa Valley features a rich diversity of terrain, micro-climates or soil types, Conn Creek’s approach to making a Napa Valley Cabernet is to blend fruit from different sub-appellations into one rich and complex wine. 2014 was an excellent, if early, vintage that produced a wine loaded with delicious dark red fruit, forest floor and spice. About 47% of the fruit was sourced from the Collins and Battuelo vineyards in St. Helena, as well as the Temple vineyard in Pope Valley. The rest of the blend came from vineyards in Chiles Valley, Oakville, Oak Knoll, Calistoga, Mt. Veeder, Howell Mountain, Rutherford, and Atlas Peak. This Conn Creek cab is a rich berry pie of a wine that will go well with grilled meats or a mushroom pilaf.
