Making Artisanal Wines Accessible to All

Founded in 2008 and located in Sebastopol, Sonoma County, the Brack Mountain Wine Company takes an approach to making and marketing wine they believe is more in tune with the 21st century. It operates neither as a “chateau” (no iconic buildings, sprawling estate vineyards, gardens, or caves) nor as a “negociant” bottler of bulk wine. Instead, the company focuses its attention entirely on the craft of producing fine wine. This begins with establishing long-term relationships with growers who farm vineyards sustainably. Whereas Brack Mountain does own a small property in the Dry Creek Valley, most of their production is sourced from excellent vineyards throughout Sonoma County as well as Napa, Mendocino and the Central Coast. BMWC produces a wide range of wines, including appellation and single-vineyard bottlings, varietal wines and blends, coastal Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, Sonoma and Napa Cabs, old-vine Zins and even such obscure varietals as Pinot Gris, Verdelho, and Charbono. Rather than bottle the whole gamut of styles and AVAs under one label, BMWC sells them under 17 different brand names - each with a unique and eye-catching label. In this way, wines from different subregions or in different price categories are given a unique identity, and the company has more versatility in targeting different markets, such as restaurants, wine bars, connoisseurs or millennials. Despite the variety, one thing remains constant: winemaking. All the wines are produced in small lots and in a style that emphasizes freshness, balance, age worthiness, and moderate levels of alcohol. Avoiding many of the costs of running a traditional winery, BMWC can afford to use such artisanal methods as natural yeast fermentations and French oak aging with even its most value-oriented labels.                                                                                                                                                                           Barrique offers a fresh take on the classic varieties of Sonoma County. The wines are made by blending the fruit of low-yielding vineyards in different sub-regions and may come with either an AVA or region designation. Combining old-world craft methods with modern technologies, Barrique graces the home or restaurant table with wines that are vibrant, fresh and modest in alcoholic strength. 2016 Barrique Sonoma County Chardonnay

In 2016, conditions in the Sonoma Coast AVA were excellent for making the perfect Barrique Chardonnay: a lively, zesty wine that balances California richness with Burgundian-like structure. Weeks of cool weather allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and develop excellent acidity and flavor. Sourcing grapes from three of Sonoma’s famous wine valleys – Russian River, Alexander and Sonoma – the winemakers set out to emphasize the purity of the Chardonnay fruit as well as the richness of the terroir. Although it was bottled after just four months in French oak, this wine went through both primary and complete malolactic fermentation in barrel. Hence, this Chardonnay is both zesty and rich, with both crisp stone fruit and creamy lemon flavors with just a hint of nutty toast.

2016 Barrique Sonoma County Pinot Noir

It’s hard to find California Pinot that offers as a superb value as Barrique Pinot Noir. It’s a wine that combines Burgundian elegance with vibrant California flavor, freshness and vitality, and yet it’s affordable enough to drink any day of the week. With grapes sourced from Carneros as well as the Russian River Valley, it has the bright aromas and acidity of the California coast but also some of those riper flavors that have made Russian River Pinot so famous. This wine pleases with a cranberry hue, black cherry and floral aromas, intense flavors, compelling earthiness and bright acidity. In the winery, about 70% of the fruit was destemmed, while 30% went into the tank as whole clusters. Natural yeast fermentation and aging in French oak on the natural lees were other artisanal methods used to craft this surprisingly affordable wine.

2015 Barrique Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon

Grapes from vineyards located in the Dry Creek and Knight’s valleys were blended to make Barrique’s 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon. The combination of cool and warm sites created a complex wine that brims with a wide spectrum of flavors. In 2015, yields were low but the quality was excellent. The deep purple color and dark berry flavors were coaxed gently into being by destemming but not crushing the grapes and allowing them to soak on their skins for 21 days. The fruit, acidity and fine tannic structure make for a wine that can be enjoyed now or savored after a few more years of bottle age.
