2013 Hall Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)


Hall Wines encompasses a total of 500 acres of vines on estate vineyards in St. Helena, Rutherford, Pope Valley, Atlas Peak as well as in the Alexander Valley in Sonoma County. Since 2003, Craig Hall and Kathryn Walt Hall have showcased state-of-the-art Napa Valley viticulture, winemaking, architecture and hospitality. Hailing from Texas, Craig Hall has been a successful entrepreneur, venture capitalist and real estate developer. Kathryn Walt Hall grew up in Mendocino, where her family tended vineyards, supplying grapes to several wineries in the region. After a career in law as well as serving as United States Ambassador to Austria, she and Craig returned to California, determined to make a mark in the Napa Valley wine industry. Hall’s estate vineyards offer a rich palette of valley floor and high-elevation terroirs and microclimates from which to craft a range of appellation and single-vineyard wines and proprietary blends. The wines are based mainly on the Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc and are produced in two state-of-the-art wineries. HALL St. Helena is the site of one of the Napa Valley’s earliest wineries built in 1885. The old “ghost winery” building is being restored as a testament to the history of Napa winemaking. It stands next to Hall’s new facility, where the largest share of Hall wines are produced. HALL Rutherford is a gravity flow winery that features stunning design, artisanship as well as artworks the Halls have collected. It is designed specifically for the production of small-lot wine, such as reserve bottlings or proprietary blends. Though Hall is relatively new to the Napa Valley, its team of winemakers, vineyard managers and consultants are dedicated to realizing the visions of the founders. The stellar scores the wines have received show that effort is paying off.


Organic viticulture, gentle handling and judicious use of new French oak are the secrets behind Hall Winery’s ability to turn out consistently delicious Cabernet Sauvignon. 2013 was another excellent Napa Valley vintage in which moderate temperatures throughout the growing season produced fruit with excellent concentration and complex flavors. Hall’s 2013 Napa Valley Cab is a perfect expression of this ideal vintage: dark and concentrated but with fruit, acidity and texture all in excellent balance. The 1.5 L bottling will turn your holiday dinner into a grand celebration!


Destemming and a computerized optical sorting machine ensured that only the best berries went into the must. Natural yeast fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks. Once in barrel (French oak – 50% new), the wine was never racked but aged on the lees for 22 months.

Tasting notes

92 points – Robert Parker. Aromas of black currants and black cherry are layered with hints of clove, wet stone and floral notes. On the palate, the wine opens up with juicy blackberry, dense chocolate and is structured with velvet tannins in the long finish. Well-integrated, nuanced and complex, the wine is approachable now but will develop over the next decade.
