2017 Cline "Farmhouse" White

2017 Cline "Farmhouse" White

The Farmhouse on the label is located at the Green String Farm in Petaluma (about 15 km from Cline Cellars). What it represents, however, is a philosophy and practice of viticulture that is “beyond sustainable.” No pesticides, herbicides or artificial fertilizers are used; sheep and goats control the weeds, and friendly insects prey upon harmful ones. Sustainable farming not only keeps the vineyards healthy but produces beautiful fruit for these delicious wines. Fred Cline has been farming the Green String way since 2001. In 2017, the blend consists of 41% Palomino, 25% Muscat Canelli, 22% Roussanne, 6% Marsanne, 5% Viognier and 1% Riesling. It’s a crisp, bright wine that delivers great value for the price. Farmhouse White pairs well with appetizers such as ripe tomatoes and mozzarella, salads with extra-virgin olive oil, Asian cuisine and fish dishes.

2017 Cline Sonoma Coast Pinot Gris

2017 Cline Sonoma Coast Pinot Gris

Like the Pinot Gris of Alsace, Cline’s Pinot Gris delivers freshness and elegance along with pure and fresh stone fruit and citrus flavors. In the Sonoma Coast region, temperatures remain cool for most of the summer as the sun tends to burn off the ocean fog for just a few hours in the afternoons. But vineyards in this climate produce grapes with intense fruit flavors and bright acidity as well as minerality picked up from the diverse clay and rocky soils. For maximum freshness and pure fruit flavors, Cline makes this wine entirely in stainless steel - without oak barrel aging. Pour a glass while making dinner or serve with lighter fare such as quiche or fish with tarragon-butter sauce.

2017 Cline North Coast Viognier

2017 Cline North Coast Viognier

Until around 30 years ago, Viognier was little known outside the Northern Rhone Valley. But when people realized how wonderfully Viognier combines a heady perfume of blossoms and peaches with a powerful body, production began to spread across Southern France and over to North America, Australia and New Zealand. A finicky grape to cultivate, it requires a proper balance of cool nights and warm days in order to preserve acidity and create the distinctive texture. The fruit in this offering was sourced from such North Coast AVAs as Carneros and the Sonoma Coast, producing a full-bodied wine with vibrant flavors. The lush mouth-feel, crisp finish, and mouth watering acidity suggest Gruyere or Camembert cheese, sushi, or tarragon chicken.

2017 SeaGlass Monterey/Santa Barbara County Riesling

2017 SeaGlass Monterey/Santa Barbara County Riesling

There’s a reason why Riesling is a favorite of the ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) crowd. Pleasing fruit and floral aromas, bright flavors, mouthwatering acidity and conspicuous minerality coalesce into a light to medium-bodied wine that excels either as an aperitif or as a dinner wine. Better still: Riesling pairs well with spicy foods and salads, making it a perfect wine for an active lifestyle. Yet finding a location with the right conditions for Riesling is difficult - especially in California. Seaglass Riesling comes from cool vineyards in Monterey and Santa Barbara counties, where the coastal breezes and low rainfall encourage the grapes to develop the aromatics, vibrance and minerality we look for in a Riesling. The distinctive blue glass bottle signals a casual spirit, but this wine will add a refreshing dimension to spicy dishes, smoked salmon or lobster salad.

2016 SeaGlass Santa Barbara County Sauvignon Blanc

This is classic Sauvignon Blanc that exhilarates with aromas of lemon, lime, grapefruit and fresh cut grass. 2016 Joel Gott California Sauvignon Blanc

2016 Joel Gott California Sauvignon Blanc

A wine that excites the palate without draining the wallet, Joel Gott’s California Sauvignon Blanc charms with crisp citrus and delicate tropical flavors. “California” is an apt designation, for this wine was built with the special qualities of grapes grown throughout the state. Vineyards in Napa and marine-influenced Monterrey provided tropical aromatics and stone fruit while those in Lake County added refreshing citrus. The diverse and rocky soils of Santa Ynez and Happy Canyon gave the wine minerality and structure. In 2016, cooler temperatures in July and August led to longer hangtime and more vibrant flavors. This Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and flavorful and will accompany a wide range of salads and casual dishes with chicken, fish or pork.

2016 Saintsbury Carneros Chardonnay (375ml)

2016 Saintsbury Carneros Chardonnay (375ml)

Gentle rolling hills and flats, loam and clay soils, and, above all, a bank of fog that rolls in regularly from San Pablo Bay make for the unique Carneros terroir that lies at the core of this energetic and zesty Chardonnay. But vineyards planted to ten over clones of Chardonnay and decades of winemaking experience also play a role in the complexity and nuance of this wine. Burgundian techniques as sur lie aging and battonage extract flavor and ensure that fruit and natural acidity remain in perfect balance. Rains returned to parched California in the winter of 2016. But harvest time saw excellent weather, and grapes could be picked at optimum ripeness. The wine is a moderate 13.5% alcohol and tastes fresh and zippy. It will pair well with braised chicken with lemon and olives, grilled whole fish, or creamy cheeses. The 375 ml bottle size will open up your meals to more creative wine choices!

2016 Brander Los Olivos District Sauvignon Blanc

2016 Brander Los Olivos District Sauvignon Blanc

2016 marks just the second vintage in which this awesome Sauvignon Blanc is bottled under the new Los Olivos District AVA, 11 years after Fred Brander himself first proposed the idea for the appellation. While the Santa Inez Valley is generally a cool region, the diverse array of microclimates and soils means that conditions differ significantly in different locales. Sandwiched between the warmer Happy Valley and the cooler Sta. Rita Hills, the Los Olivos District hits a sweet spot for Sauvignon Blanc. In 2016, August and September nights were cool enough to slow down the maturation of the grapes. Yields were moderate and the quality exceptionally high. This wine sets a high bar for Sauvignon Blanc, delivering pure pleasure with an exuberant nose and fruit flavors that last long into the finish. Enjoy this wine even with blue cheese or a Caesar salad.

2016 Cline North Coast Roussanne Marsanne

2016 Cline North Coast Roussanne Marsanne

Vintners in the Rhone Valley have long known that Roussane and Marsanne are fantastic blend partners, able to combine into a white wine that’s delightfully aromatic yet rich and well-bodied. While Marsanne provides depth, body, richness and nuttiness, Roussanne adds acidity as well as floral and fruity aromatics. The result is a rich and elegant wine to be enjoyed with meals. Both varieties are rare in California. The Marsanne comes from a small corner of Cline’s Carneros estate while the Roussanne is sourced from vineyards in the Sonoma Coast as well as Lake County. The combination of citrus, tropical fruit and full-bodied vitality suggests smoked fish, grilled salmon, or even curried or stir-fried dishes. Cline is one of a handful in California making wine from Marsanne and Roussanne; those looking to move beyond the typical whites should give this one a try!

2016 Joel Gott Unoaked Chardonnay

2016 Joel Gott Unoaked Chardonnay

Sourced from vineyards in Monterey and Santa Barbara, where the maritime climate encourages the development of bright flavors and fresh acidity, Joel Gott’s Chardonnay is elegant, affordable and easy to pair with many a dish. Fruit from Napa added rich tropical notes, while the Sonoma component laid down the minerality and complexity. In 2016, winter “El Niño” rains brought some relief to the California drought and cool nights in July and August encouraged even ripening. Modeled on Chablis, this wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel and not put through malolactic fermentation. The result is a Chardonnay with backbone, fresh acidity and the pure fruit flavors that help make dining a real pleasure. Shellfish, steamed or grilled fish, risotto or pasta with fresh vegetables all spring to mind as pairings with this wine.

2016 Barrique Sonoma County Chardonnay

2016 Barrique Sonoma County Chardonnay

In 2016, conditions in the Sonoma Coast AVA were excellent for making the perfect Barrique Chardonnay: a lively, zesty wine that balances California richness with Burgundian-like structure. Weeks of cool weather allowed the grapes to ripen slowly and develop excellent acidity and flavor. Sourcing grapes from three of Sonoma’s famous wine valleys – Russian River, Alexander and Sonoma – the winemakers set out to emphasize the purity of the Chardonnay fruit as well as the richness of the terroir. Although it was bottled after just four months in French oak, this wine went through both primary and complete malolactic fermentation in barrel. Hence, this Chardonnay is both zesty and rich, with both crisp stone fruit and creamy lemon flavors with just a hint of nutty toast.
