2015 Castle Rock Central Coast Chardonnay

2015 Castle Rock Central Coast Chardonnay

The grapes for this enticing Chardonnay were sourced from excellent vineyards located up and down the Central Coast, a region characterized by a perfect combination of sunshine, fog and ocean breezes. It’s conditions such as these that produce Chardonnay that balances intense flavor with bright acidity. Because dry conditions in 2015 inspired an early harvest, yields in Central Coast vineyards were lower than usual. However, lower yields led to more concentrated, flavorful fruit. Rich, ripe and fruity, this Chardonnay will pair well with fish, poultry and lightly sauced entrees.

2015 Cline "Farmhouse" White

2015 Cline "Farmhouse" White

In 1982, Fred Cline established his winery near Oakley, California, a region in northern Contra Costa County that runs along the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers. In Oakley’s sandy soils and cool climate, he found an excellent location to pursue his vision of an estate focused on the less well-known grape varieties of the Rhone Valley. “Farmhouse” recalls the wine produced by immigrant farmers in Oakley in the early 20th century. In 2015, the blend of five whites is dominated by 43% Viognier and 40% Palomino - as opposed to 45% Sauvignon Blanc and 36% Palomino in 2014. Aromatic, full-flavored and with lots of body, Farmhouse White pairs well with appetizers such as ripe tomatoes and mozzarella, salads with extra-virgin olive oil, Asian cuisine and fish dishes.

2016 Cline Sonoma Coast Pinot Gris

2016 Cline Sonoma Coast Pinot Gris

Like the Pinot Gris of Alsace, Cline’s Pinot Gris delivers freshness and elegance along with pure and fresh stone fruit and citrus flavors. In the Sonoma Coast region, temperatures remain cool for most of the summer as the sun tends to burn off the ocean fog for just a few hours in the afternoons. But vineyards in this climate produce grapes with intense fruit flavors and bright acidity as well as minerality picked up from the diverse clay and rocky soils. For maximum freshness and pure fruit flavors, Cline uses no oak when making this wine. Pour a glass while making dinner or serve with lighter fare such as quiche or fish with tarragon-butter sauce.

2016 Cline North Coast Viognier

2016 Cline North Coast Viognier

Until around 30 years ago, production of Viognier was limited to a small corner of the Northern Rhone Valley and was in danger of becoming extinct. However, when a new generation of wine lovers discovered how Viognier can combine a heady perfume of blossoms and peaches with a powerful body, production began to spread in Southern France, North and South America. Nevertheless, it is a difficult grape to get right; because of its naturally low acid, it requires a proper balance of cool nights and warm days. The fruit in this offering was sourced from such North Coast AVAs as Carneros and the Sonoma Coast, producing a full-bodied wine with vibrant flavors. The lush mouth-feel, crisp finish, and mouth watering acidity suggest Gruyere or Camembert cheese, sushi, or tarragon chicken.

2015 Joel Gott California Sauvignon Blanc

2015 Joel Gott California Sauvignon Blanc

A wine that excites the palate without draining the wallet, Joel Gott’s California Sauvignon Blanc charms with crisp citrus and delicate tropical flavors. “California” is an apt designation, for this wine was built with the special qualities of grapes grown throughout the state. Vineyards in Napa and marine-influenced Monterrey provided tropical aromatics and stone fruit while those in Lake County added refreshing citrus. The diverse and rocky soils of Santa Ynez and Happy Valley gave the wine minerality and structure. Dry conditions in 2015 led to an early harvest, but the grapes had great concentration of flavor due to tighter clusters and smaller berries than usual. This Sauvignon Blanc is crisp and flavorful and will accompany a wide range of salads and casual dishes with chicken, fish or pork.

2014 Saintsbury Carneros Chardonnay (375ml)

2014 Saintsbury Carneros Chardonnay (375ml)

Bright fruit, a hint of oak and crisp flavors make Saintsbury’s Carneros Chardonnay a great match for simple seafood or chicken dishes or mild cheeses. The terroir of rolling hills, loam and clay soils and a cool climate is one factor behind this distinctive Chardonnay. The variety of clones planted in the vineyards is another. In the winery, Saintsbury uses such Burgundian techniques as sur lie aging and battonage to extract more flavor and ensure that fruit and natural acidity remain in perfect balance. In 2014, just enough rain fell in early spring to mitigate the effects of an ongoing drought. A somewhat warmer summer led to fruit with concentrated tropical flavors. With excellent weather at harvest, the winery could extend picking to bring in grapes at optimum ripeness. The 375 ml bottle is great for weeknights or trips.

2015 Brander Los Olivos District Sauvignon Blanc

2015 Brander Los Olivos District Sauvignon Blanc

2015 marks the first vintage in which this awesome Sauvignon Blanc is bottled under the new Los Olivos District AVA, 10 years after Fred Brander himself first proposed the idea for the appellation. While the Santa Inez Valley is generally a cool region, the diverse array of microclimates and soils mean that conditions differ significantly in different locales. Sandwiched between the warmer Happy Valley and the cooler Sta. Rita Hills, the Los Olivos District hits a sweet spot for Sauvignon Blanc. Even though 2015 saw such challenges as an early bud break and harvest, inconvenient spring rains and a less-than-normal yield, this stellar Sauvignon Blanc delivers pure pleasure with an exuberant nose and fruit flavors that last long into the finish. This wine will stand up well to blue cheese or a Caesar salad.

2016 Cline North Coast Roussanne Marsanne

2016 Cline North Coast Roussanne Marsanne

Vintners in the Rhone Valley have long known that Roussane and Marsanne are fantastic blend partners, able to combine into a white wine that’s delightfully aromatic yet rich and well-bodied. While Marsanne provides depth, body, richness and nuttiness, Roussanne adds acidity as well as floral and fruity aromatics. The result is a rich and elegant wine to be enjoyed with meals. Both varieties are rare in California. The Marsanne comes from a small corner of Cline’s Carneros estate while the Roussanne is sourced from vineyards in the Sonoma Coast as well as Lake County. The combination of citrus, tropical fruit and full-bodied vitality suggests smoked fish, grilled salmon, or even curried or stir-fried dishes. Cline is one of a handful in California making wine from Marsanne and Roussanne; those looking to move beyond the typical whites should give this one a try!

2015 Joel Gott Unoaked Chardonnay

2015 Joel Gott Unoaked Chardonnay

This stylish yet affordable wine combines the unique qualities of some of California’s best appellations for Chardonnay. Much of the fruit was sourced from  Monterey and Santa Barbara, where the marine influence encourages slow ripening and the development of bright flavors and acidity. Fruit from Napa added rich tropical notes, while the Sonoma component laid down the minerality and complexity. In 2015, spring and summer temperatures were generally moderate; nevertheless, a lack of rainfall encouraged an early harvest of grapes with intense flavors and excellent acidity. Modeled on Chablis, this wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel and not put  through malolactic fermentation. The result is a Chardonnay with backbone, fresh acidity and the pure fruit flavors that help make dining a real pleasure. Shellfish, steamed or grilled fish, risotto or pasta with fresh vegetables all spring to mind as pairings with this wine.

2015 Barrique Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

2015 Barrique Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

This Chardonnay may may provide the first serious taste of 2015, a vintage that will be remembered in California as very dry and earlier than ever. Sourcing grapes from three of Sonoma’s famous wine valleys – Russian River, Alexander and Sonoma – the winemakers set out to emphasize the purity of the Chardonnay fruit as well as the richness of the terroir. Although it was bottled after just four months in French oak, this wine went through both primary and complete secondary fermentation in barrel. Hence, this Chardonnay is both zesty and rich, with both crisp stone fruit and creamy lemon flavors with just a hint of nutty toast.

2014 Bench Russian River Valley Chardonnay

2014 Bench Russian River Valley Chardonnay

Located in the Russian River Valley, the Louvau and Bazzano vineyards used as the source for this wine were planted in the 1970s. Even though less was understood in those days about matching clones to vineyard sites, these vines consistently produce grapes with excellent fruit, acidity and minerality. While 2014 saw an early harvest due to the onset of drought, summer temperatures were mild and grape quality, excellent. Aged in oak for only a few months, Bench Chardonnay is made in a crisp, approachable style that emphasizes the purity, natural acidity and minerality of the fruit. It would pair well with seared scallops or grilled sea bass.

2015 Pacific Heights Russian River Valley Chardonnay

2015 Pacific Heights Russian River Valley Chardonnay

If you like Chardonnay that’s recognizably Californian – that is, full-flavored and rich with tropical fruit in balance with refreshing citrus – you will enjoy Pacific Heights Russian River Chardonnay. And the reasonable price may encourage you to stock up and enjoy often! According to the winery, the Russian River Valley features soil “predominately made of sand and pebble, characterized by good drainage and poor soil fertility. This allows greater vineyard management control to customize growing conditions. The weather is influenced by the close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, where evening fog remains through the night and lingers into the morning, dropping the temperature nearly 5 °C. The resulting chardonnay has full fruit maturity and retention of crisp acidity.”
