Whereas the French know Malbec primarily as the grape in the “black wine of Cahors,” Malbec is perhaps best known as the workhorse of robust Argentine reds. Yet, Malbec also flourishes in the Mediterranean climate of the Dry Creek Valley. The perfect balance of cool and warm conditions preserves acidity while building big flavors. In 2013, the grapes sourced for this wine showed a significant concentration of flavors and aromas, resulting in a wine with a big blackberry feel and dark cherry fruit impressions. Great with entrees with wine-based stock. Gold Medal and Best In Class winner at the 2017 West Coast Wine Competition.

Winery Description

After many years working as a winemaker and grapegrower with such wineries as Schramsberg, Geyser Peak and Canyon Road, Mike Draxton founded Draxton Wines in 1999 with a team of similarly-experienced wine industry veterans. A key part of the business model, which grew into a separate winemaking company, was to consult and make wine for local growers, many of whom provided fruit to some of Sonoma County’s best-known wineries. This allowed Mike and his team to build long-term relationships with a long list of growers and to develop keen knowledge of the vineyards cultivated by the old-time farming families. And so when Mike needed grapes for his own labels, he always had excellent vineyards to draw upon. Not long ago, Draxton Wines had to shut down operations, and Hotei Wines seized the opportunity to import some of Draxton’s vintages. Mature wines made in small lots from the grapes of local growers in the Alexander and Dry Creek valleys are rarely seen on store shelves in Japan, and Hotei fans are well-advised to take advantage of these excellent offerings.
